Project Overview

Shots Fired Azimuth Detector

Situational awareness and recreated 3D environments using acoustic AI.

Situational awareness is one of the biggest challenges in conducting ground operations. When someone opens fire, it’s often difficult to have awareness of their location, the size of the force, and even their direction of fire and their friendly/enemy status. To quickly spread awareness of an attacking enemy unit, infantrymen immediately announce the “3Ds,” or the distance, direction, and description of the enemy. This can be effective, but it can also easily fail if the soldier is unable to glean all the information accurately and pass it on.

That’s why we created the shots fired azimuth detector (aka Seeing Ear Bats). We use acoustic AI for situational awareness to identify sources of incoming fire, provide advanced warning and confirmation for visual inference, and automate infantry call for fire procedures.

We used the Unity game engine to recreate a 3D environment to simulate a spatialized sound emitter (gun). The engine records the sound and writes to a new file. The model processes the new sound file and uses the direction and distance of the shot for further output. We randomized the variables to generate sound data, train the model, and create inferences from each simulation. Ultimately, we ended up with nearly 2,400 new audio clips in less than an hour.

Results

Seeing Ear Bats were able to detect angles to 30-degree precision with 89% accuracy and to 15-meter precision with 94% accuracy. The operationalized version will be a wearable device. It will also be able to identify what type of weapon is firing and the direction from which it is shooting.
