Project Overview

Blockchain Cybersecurity – Log Files

Novel deployment of blockchain expedites audit log review process.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security requires all federal agencies to submit annual Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) reports to verify the integrity of federal networks and systems. A key component in the CDM report is a review of system audit logs, a tedious process that can take weeks or months to complete and can easily be corrupted. Our hackers chose to develop a solution to expedite this process using a novel application of blockchain. Blockchain is known for its innate provenance and immutability, making it ideal for this program. We created a separate audit log where corrupt, missing, or altered audit logs are identified immediately, analyzed efficiently, and resolved in minimal time. The process of completing the log portion of the CDM report went from weeks to hours.
